Each town has it on
funny and bizarre habits that generally include shopping habits.I will focus on
a certain town in central part of Kenya
that is called Nyeri and its commonly inhabited by the Kikuyu community.In
Nyeri people have a way of shopping .If you go there and purchase a whole kg of
meat for “Nyamachoma ” in a “bushere”
the people of Nyeri town will be aware that you are not from the town
but a tourist there.Here are some of the Nyerians shopping habits.
1.Nyerians always carry the
exact money that will be enough for the shopping,no extra cash-The
arrangements of items in the supermarket are arranged in order that if you are
buying milk you will also find bread
near so that you may pick bread and milk
but this does not apply to the people of Nyeri.They pick what they came
for,no extra money for what was not planned.
2.People
from Nyeri rarely buy milk in dispensers where they may be also required to pay
for the tin of the bottle where the milk will be put in.To Nyerians,there is no
need of wasting your hard earned cash on buying bottle and milk. If you visit
some homes you will be surprised to be served with a tea that looks like donkey
urine.No milk, no sugar.Its all about saving the cash for future.

3.The fact
that buying vegetables from the supermarked involves less hassle and they are
very fresh,Nyerians would rather have the local market collision of people in
sacks so that they can buy from the local market where they can bargain the
price and get even more additional as
they will pose as customers who are always buying each day
4.People
from Nyeri will always compare price from different shops and they will discuss
which shop or supermarket sells one commodity cheaply.They can buy flour in one
supermarket and then move another two kilometers to another shop to by tissue
paper where they believe its more cheaper. Not all commodities are bought in
one shop.
5.Nyerians
will always buy items in the small quantity.Some of the small quantity items
that are popular in Nyeri is the small bottle of soda that cost on 20 bob from
Mt Kenya bottlers..Nyerians have nicknamed the small soda as “tu-querro”.The
one litre soda are not very popular.They are bought by people who are not from
Nyeri,generally visitors.We talked to one shop keeper who confirmed that to us
that he does not stock his shop with the one litre sodas.
6.There are
several things that are avoided by the Nyerians as they term them to be for
people who are foreigners.Some things
like coconut cream and yoghurt are for Nairobi people.They are hardly bought by
Nyeri people.
